Leslie started her violin studies in Nova Scotia before moving to B.C. where she studied at the Conservatories of Music in Vancouver and Nanaimo. She is a private violin teacher as well as a faculty member with the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. Leslie performed with the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra for many years. She is first violin with Trio Chocolat as well as principal second violin with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra.
Peter took free violin group lessons in Hong Kong when he was twelve. Three years later when the free instrumental training program ended, he joined the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra and continued playing the violin for several years before moving to Canada. Upon retirement, and inspired by a concert of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra, Peter revived his interest in the violin by taking lessons with Karl Rainer, the NCO’s Music Director. In the fall of 2011 he joined the NCO and has enjoyed playing in the orchestra ever since.

Christine has always had a love for music, playing violin in school orchestras and community orchestras. After emigrating to Canada, she studied music at the University of Victoria. Christine then moved to Alberta where she taught Suzuki viola and violin for over 20 years and played with numerous groups and orchestras. She now enjoys playing violin (and sometimes viola) with the NCO. Biography is unavailable. Monica Morosan is a music lover with an extensive background as a member of different orchestras and choirs in Europe and Canada. She began her violin studies in Bucharest, Romania at the age of 6 under Magdalena Albu and Elena Scelcunov. When her young family of four moved to Canada in 2007 she began to look for music groups to join. In September 2007 she joined the Malaspina Choir. A year later she joined the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. Music has had a major role in her life and her two sons are also inspired by it. They are both students of the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music studying piano, oboe and harp. Stephen loves music. He was a founding member of the Nananimo Chamber Orchestra and served as principal violist for nine of his twelve years with the ensemble. He continues to enjoy playing in the violin sections. Stephen has played with a variety of ensembles over the years: Nanaimo Fiddle Kids, Nanaimo Conservatory String Orchestra, Victoria Youth Symphony, Malaspina Stage Band (Trombone), and Don Wright Wind Symphony (Trombone). Stephen studied piano and viola performance at VIU and earned an Associate in Music diploma. He went on to study music education and social science at the University of Victoria. Stephen is a private music teacher and he directs and accompanies various choirs. He enjoys spending time with his two girls, two dogs, one cat, and very patient goldfish. |
Kathy Riley
|
Kathy was born in Edmonton into a musical family. Both her parents were singers, and each of their eight children took music lessons and sang. Kathy’s mother was very active in the music community in Edmonton and often had the “von Riley” family performing musical interludes throughout the city. Kathy started violin lessons at the age of 3 with the first group of children in Canada to be taught the Suzuki method, under the tutelage of Ms. Tanaka After leaving the Suzuki program at the age of 12, Kathy studied under Broderyck (Broddy) Olson and Richard Caldwell. In her late teens Kathy put her music on hold to pursue her career, but the tug of the strings was ever present. Kathy moved to Vancouver Island in 1995, partly because of its music scene. In 2006 Kathy saw a small ad in one of the Nanaimo papers looking for string players and decided to listen in on a rehearsal. She was hooked and has been playing with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra ever since. While Kathy’s musical tastes are very broad, she reaps the most joy from playing classical music. |
Fran Tolson
Fran was very fortunate as a youngster to live in a community where music and drama were easily available. There were many excellent teachers as well as opportunities for youth to participate in concerts, festivals, choirs and orchestras. Fran’s parents had an extensive record collection of not only classical music but contemporary albums as well. Fran enjoyed music as an important part of her formative years. As a nurse in training, and later as a young mother, Fran found that those obligations limited her pursuit of her musical interests. Fran feels privileged in recent years to have become a member of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. She believes that her experience with the NCO is a wonderful learning process. To quote Fran, "It is a joy to be able to play music with the group."
