“Chamber Music - a conversation between friends.”
- Catherine Drinker Bowen -
The Wisteria String Quartet is quickly gaining recognition as a dynamic and refreshing chamber ensemble in the Greater Victoria area. Founded in the fall of 2016, the members of this string quartet have performed on stages across Vancouver Island, and are mentored by the Lafayette String Quartet, artists-in-residence at the University of Victoria. The Wisteria String Quartet features violinists Amy-Lynne Toth and Jasmine Mather, violist Maki Yamagata, and cellist Claire Dresselhuis, each of whom are currently majoring in performance at the University of Victoria.

The Wisteria Quartet (WSQ) has appeared in performances at the Victoria Summer Music Festival and the Victoria Golf Club, and are two-time guests hosted by Victoria’s Christ Church Cathedral in their artists series showcasing up-and-coming talent. Most recently, the WSQ was the featured artist in the Musical Antidote to Dark, Dreary Winter Evenings (MADDWEve) concert series on Hornby Island. Yet, it is the beloved stage and acoustics of the Philip T. Young Recital Hall (at the University of Victoria) that they call home.

The Wisteria String Quartet is dedicated to musical exploration. Experienced in diverse collaborations, venues and audiences they are passionate about sharing their love of chamber music. Whether classical or contemporary, the Wisteria String Quartet is committed to creating meaningful musical conversation with one another and their audiences.

Program
St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst
 I Crisantemi by G Puccini
Antiche Danze Ed Arie Per Liuto by Ottorino Respighi
Introduction and Allegro,  Op. 47 for String Quartet and String Orchestra by Edward Elgar

St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst was composed in 1912 for St. Paul’s Girl’s School in London.  This work has 4 movements, the final movement named “Dargason” for an old English folk tune, in which Holst deftly juxtaposes the melody for “Greensleeves”.  I Crisantemi (the Chrysanthemum, written in one night to commemorate the death of the Duke of Savoy), composed originally for string quartet by Puccini in 1890, is a single, dark-hued, continuous movement. Puccini found his two liquid melodic ideas worthy enough to re-use in the last act of his 1893 opera, “Manon Lescaut”.  Ancient Airs & Dances, Suite 3, composed by Respighi in 1932, is a work in 4 movements based on Renaissance lute music. “Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47” for string quartet and string orchestra was composed by Edward Elgar in 1905 for the then newly-formed London Symphony Orchestra.
