The Island Consort Chamber Choir is a 20-voice community chamber choir that first appeared in concert in late April 2007. Our repertoire is varied and loosely “classical”, focusing on sacred and secular music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. We rehearse Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30. This is an auditioned group with considerable musical and choral experience, one that aspires to a higher standard of performance. Our members include amateur and professional musicians, choir directors and music educators. Prospective members may audition from time to time as positions come open. Contact the choir if you have an interest in joining. We perform mostly a cappella pieces, but past concerts have included accompaniment by organ, guitar, harpsichord and members of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. As well as organizing our own concerts we also take an active part in the Nanaimo Sings!festivals as well as a few other community choral events. In the spring of 2010 we provided the live musical soundtrack to dance company Dancers Dancing's performance of "Voices in Motion, bodies that Sing" at the Port Theatre, Nanaimo. In November, 2014, we joined with 2 other choirs to sing Mozart’s Requiem with the Vancouver Island Symphony, under Pierre Simard.
Next concert: “Music From the Heart”, Nov. 29th 7:30 pm at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Qualicum – and Dec. 1st, 7:30 pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Nanaimo. Organist, Jenny Vincent is our accompanist. Admission is $20 at the door.
In the 2019/2020 season Malaspina Choir celebrates its 50th year of presenting outstanding concerts from the choral repertoire. We will present three programs - November, December and our 50th anniversary concert in early May. We welcome all singers, and invite you to join, especially if it's something you've been meaning to do for some time.
Malaspina Choir and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra present 10th Annual Sing Along Messiah @ St. Peter's Catholic Church, 301 Machleary St., Nanaimo
Friday, December 13, 2019 @ 7:30 p.m.
Sing-along Messiahs are a tradition in many communities and Nanaimo is no exception. Our tenth annual performance is your opportunity to be a chorister with the Malaspina Choir as we sing Handel’s transcendent Messiah under the direction of Lionel Tanod. The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra provides the accompaniment with Jenny Vincent on continuo and Hugh Middleton on trumpet. Our soloists are Rebecca Collett, soprano; Julia Morgan, alto; Nolan Kehler, tenor; and Michael MacKinnon, bass. Exalt the glory of the Lord, tell good tidings to Zion, behold the Lamb of God, sing Hallelujah. And if you’re not a singer? You will enjoy being surrounded by this incomparable music and hearing the trumpet sound! Please note our new performance time and venue. This year we will be fundraising at the performance for our 50th Anniversary legacy project to support the arts in Nanaimo. Scores for Messiah will be available for purchase at the door.
