Baroque Moments
Featuring
Cellist: Alexandra Lee

Cello Concerto in D minor, RV 407 (Antonio Vivaldi)
Take a step back in time to when music was performed for royalty and the aristocracy with their mannered institutions of concerts and dance.  These “Baroque Moments” will be re-visited for you by the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra in a program of 5 notable works featuring special guest cellist, Alexandra Lee, to play Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Minor, RV 407 for cello and strings.  Of the 27 Cello Concertos written by Vivaldi, seven (including RV 407) were kept in the library of Count Rudolf Schönberg and are known as the Schönberg concertos.  In this concerto Vivaldi was able to realize the tonal nuances and virtuoso potential of the cello.

A graduate of the University of Toronto’s Music Performance program (2003), Alexandra Lee is co-founder of the Silver Birch String Quartet (est. 2004).  She has made three recordings and has been nominated for Juno and Félix awards (2010). She has had the pleasure of collaborating in concert with many of Canada’s prominent musicians and composers.   Now enjoying life on Vancouver Island, Alexandra teaches cello at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music and plays in the Vancouver Island Symphony and Victoria Symphony Orchestras.

To summarize, the NCO will also play Lully’s Le Triomphe de l’Amour, a court ballet commissioned by Louis XIV, first danced at the Paris Opera in 1681 to sensational reviews.  Handel’s Concerto Grosso in F Major, Op 6, No. 9 is a work in 6 movements, one of twelve concerti from 1739 that are amongst the finest examples in this genre, with influences from all over Europe.   Telemann’s Concerto Polonois in G Major was published around 1705 while he was in Sorau, Poland and, within its 3 movements, contains elements of Polish folk music.  Geminiani’s compositions are noted for their imagination, expression, and warmth, but also for their lack of discipline.  Concerto Grosso op.3 no.1, published in 1732, is one of six concertos written in London (where he spent 40 years). For lovers of Baroque music and classical strings this concert will illuminate a wonderful cross-section of music of the early 18th century.
