"Musical Dreams"
Featuring Ella Wyndlow on Violin

Winner of the 2018 NCO Concerto Competition

June 2, 7:30 pm at  VIU Theatre, Nanaimo  MAP
June 3, 2:30 pm at Knox United Church, Parksville  MAP

"Musical Dreams"
The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra has chosen 3 works to perform on its June program.

Anton Dvorak composed his enchanting "Serenade for Strings" in 1875, a work in 5 movements that evoke thoughts of shy sentiment, old-world courtliness, deep expression and the nature of his native Bohemia.

Little-known Estonian composer, Heino Eller (1887-1970), born in Tartu, musically educated in St. Petersburg, became a very  influential teacher of succeeding generations of Estonian musicians. The NCO will play his "Five Pieces for String Orchestra". This short suite blends Baltic/Nordic influences with the Russian tradition: Romanticism becomes enriched with gentle impressionistic overtones, along with echoes of Estonian folk music.  The 5 movements are: Romance, Dance, Dance, Lullaby and Homeland Tune.

Under the direction of Karl Rainer, the NCO is pleased to feature this year's Concerto Competition winner, 13-year old violinist, Ella Wyndlow, to perform Vivaldi's "Violin Concerto in G Minor, Op. 12, No. 1". Opus 12 is a set of  6 Concertos published in 1729: No. 1 is in 3 movements; a lively Allegro followed by a lovely, somewhat melancholy Adagio, finishing with a joyful Allegro.

Picture
Ella is 13 years old and has been studying violin for 10 years. She started her studies with Art Petrie at the age of 4 at the Nanaimo Conservatory. Since Art Petrie's retirement she has continued her studies with Karl Rainer.
Ella is a very disciplined and dedicated student who practices over an hour each day. She believes that the quality and time of her practice has changed and improved over the years with more focus now on listening for tuning, dynamics and the overall flow of the piece. To create a mood for a particular piece she will often visualize images or settings such as a graduation ceremony, a rainy day or a farmer's market. What she enjoys the most about the violin is when she knows a piece well enough to be able to add a few personal touches.
Ella has had many other experiences playing as part of an orchestra or group. She plays violin with the Nanaimo Conservatory's Quintet every Monday and participated in the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra (GVYO) summer camp last year. She is looking forward to joining the GVYO again this summer. Ella also plays tenor saxophone with her school's Grade 8 band and jazz band. This is her first experience playing as a soloist with an orchestra and so far she is finding it very interesting and was very surprised at how well the first rehearsal went!
Ella attends the Grade 8 French Immersion program at Ladysmith Secondary School and lives in Yellowpoint.
