Jeremy Rainer 2025 Concerto Competition Winner
Jeremy Rainer, age 15, was born into a musical family with a concentrated gene pool of viola players, including great-great aunt Lillian Fuchs, viola faculty member at the Juilliard School of Music from 1971-1993. Jeremy began his journey with the viola at age 3 with Suzuki teacher Trish Horrocks whom he still studies with today. Jeremy plays in Nanaimo’s award-winning fiddle group Fiddelium, and is a member of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra viola section. In 2023 at age 13, he performed the Telemann Viola Concerto as guest soloist with Phil’s Harmonics string ensemble in Port Alberni. He has represented the Mid-Island at the Provincial Music Festival for the past five years, either as a Junior participant or as part of a chamber ensemble with his brothers. This year he was named as the Mid-Island’s Junior B strings representative to Provincials. For this concert, he will be drawing out the rich warm tone of his grandmother’s 1732 Walmsley viola.
